Pre-Workout in Kenya: What Is Actually In It

Buying guide · NewFitness Nutrition, Koinange Street, Nairobi CBD · Updated July 2026

What each ingredient does, effective doses, why the tingling means nothing, who should avoid stimulants, and current Nairobi prices.

Do you need one?

Pre-workout is mostly caffeine with a few supporting ingredients. A strong cup of coffee delivers 95 to 165mg of caffeine for a fraction of the price and does most of the same job.

What a good pre-workout adds is a sensible dose of caffeine alongside beta-alanine, citrulline and sometimes creatine, in one drink. That convenience is real. It is also the entire advantage.

If you train in the evening, think carefully. Caffeine has a half-life of five to six hours. A 300mg pre-workout at 6pm means roughly 150mg still circulating at midnight. Poor sleep costs you more than the session gained.

What is actually in it

IngredientEffective doseWhat it does
Caffeine3–6mg/kg bodyweightThe main active. Reduces perceived effort, improves output.
Beta-alanine3.2–6.4g dailyBuffers acid in longer sets. Causes the tingling. Works cumulatively, not acutely.
Citrulline malate6–8gIncreases blood flow. Responsible for the pump.
Creatine3–5gWorks daily, not pre-workout. Often under-dosed in blends.
Tyrosine1–2gFocus. Modest evidence.
Betaine2.5gSmall strength benefit. Reasonable evidence.
BCAAFiller in a pre-workout. Adds nothing if you eat enough protein.

Compare the label to that table. Many products list impressive ingredients at a fraction of the effective dose, which is why proprietary blends that hide individual amounts are worth avoiding.

The tingling is not the product working

That pins-and-needles feeling is paraesthesia from beta-alanine. It is harmless, it fades with regular use, and it tells you nothing about whether the product is effective. Beta-alanine works by saturating over weeks, exactly like creatine — the tingle is a side effect, not a signal.

Some brands deliberately over-dose beta-alanine so the product feels like it is doing something.

Using it sensibly

  • Start with half a scoop. Tolerance varies widely. A full scoop of a strong product is 350mg+ of caffeine.
  • 20 to 30 minutes before training. Caffeine peaks around 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Not every session. Tolerance builds fast. Save it for hard sessions and train on coffee or nothing otherwise.
  • Not after 3pm if you sleep at 10pm.
  • Never stack with energy drinks, fat burners or strong coffee on the same day. Doses add up quickly.
Who should avoid stimulant pre-workouts: anyone with high blood pressure, a heart condition or an arrhythmia; anyone pregnant or breastfeeding; anyone under 18; anyone on medication that interacts with stimulants. If you feel chest tightness, an unusual heart rate or persistent dizziness, stop and see a doctor. Stimulant-free pump products are an alternative.

Checking it is genuine

Stimulant products are the worst category to buy counterfeit — you do not know the dose, and caffeine is the one ingredient where dose genuinely matters for safety. Check the seal, buy from a physical shop, and never buy short-dated stimulant products.

Common questions

Is pre-workout safe?

For healthy adults using sensible doses, generally yes. Avoid it if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, are pregnant, or are under 18.

Why does pre-workout make me tingle?

Beta-alanine causes paraesthesia. It is harmless, fades with regular use, and is not a sign the product is working.

Can I take pre-workout every day?

You can, but tolerance builds quickly. Using it only for hard sessions keeps it effective.

Is coffee just as good?

For the caffeine, largely yes and far cheaper. Pre-workout adds citrulline and beta-alanine, which coffee does not.

Can I take pre-workout in the evening?

Only if you sleep well afterwards. Caffeine has a five to six hour half-life. A stimulant-free pump product is the better evening option.

What if I feel jittery or anxious?

You have taken too much for your tolerance. Halve the dose. If it persists, switch to a stimulant-free product.
