Mass Gainers in Kenya: Who Actually Needs One

Buying guide · NewFitness Nutrition, Koinange Street, Nairobi CBD · Updated July 2026

Most people buying a mass gainer do not need one. This explains who does, what to check on the label, the cheaper homemade alternative, and current Nairobi prices.

Do you actually need a gainer?

A mass gainer is calories in powder form. Most are 1,000 to 1,300 calories per serving, of which the majority is carbohydrate — usually maltodextrin — with 40 to 60 grams of protein.

That is useful for one specific problem: you have genuinely tried to eat more and cannot. It solves nothing else.

Before you buy one, answer honestly: have you spent two weeks deliberately eating more? Adding a third meal, cooking with oil, drinking milk with meals? Most people who describe themselves as hardgainers have never tracked what they eat. Food is cheaper and better than powder.

If you have tried and the scale still will not move, a gainer is a legitimate tool. It is easier to drink 1,000 calories than chew them.

The homemade alternative

A blender, 500ml whole milk, 80g oats, a banana, two tablespoons peanut butter and a scoop of whey gives roughly 900 calories and 45g protein. Cost per serving is well under what a commercial gainer works out to, and the carbohydrate quality is better.

The commercial version wins on convenience and nothing else. If you will actually make the shake, make the shake.

Reading a gainer label

  • Protein per serving relative to calories. 50g protein in 1,200 calories is reasonable. 20g protein in 1,200 calories is a sugar drink.
  • Serving size. Many list a 250 to 350 gram serving, often two or three scoops. A 5kg tub at 250g servings is twenty servings, not fifty.
  • Sugar versus complex carbs. Maltodextrin digests fast, which suits post-training but can cause bloating in large amounts. Oat flour is gentler.
  • Added creatine. Some include it. Fine, but check the dose — often below the 3 to 5 gram threshold that does anything.

Or start with whey plus food

If you are unsure whether you need a gainer, whey plus deliberate eating is the cheaper first step.

How to use one without wasting it

Start with half a serving. A full serving on day one commonly causes bloating and appetite loss, which defeats the point — you eat less at your next meal and net nothing.

Take it between meals or after training, not instead of a meal. A gainer is meant to be additional calories, not replacement calories.

Expect some fat gain. A calorie surplus adds both muscle and fat. Aim for 300 to 500 calories above maintenance rather than 1,200, or you will gain mostly fat. That often means half a serving, not a full one.

Checking it is genuine

Gainers are heavy and expensive to ship, which makes them a target for under-filling. Weigh the tub if you can — a 5kg gainer should weigh about 5kg plus packaging. Check the foil seal is bonded to the rim.

Common questions

Will a mass gainer make me fat?

Some fat gain comes with any calorie surplus. Using half servings and aiming for a moderate surplus keeps the ratio favourable.

Gainer or whey for a beginner?

Whey, plus deliberate eating. Only move to a gainer if you have genuinely tried to eat more and cannot.

How many servings a day?

Usually one, often half. The goal is a moderate surplus on top of your normal meals, not to replace them.

Can I make my own?

Yes. Milk, oats, banana, peanut butter and whey gives around 900 calories for less than a commercial serving costs.

Do gainers work for skinny people who eat a lot?

If you genuinely eat a lot and do not gain, the issue is usually that you eat less than you think, or your training is not driving growth. Track intake for a week before buying.

How long does a 5kg gainer last?

At full servings, roughly twenty days. At half servings, about forty.
